Thousands of Miles, a Common Dream

The ever-budding willows in farewells
The ever-growing clouds in sights
The ever-echoing birdsong in ears
The ever-haunting lovesickness in hearts

The farewell had put us on the gateway
On horse I left for the ferry, seeing you away
Together or apart, near or far
Sharing a heart, friends still we are

In my arms sleeps the moon
Casting velvety dreams to lane and road
The twittering swallow, please
Bestow spring jasmines to every household

Guests from the east and the west
Travelers from the north and the south
Beyond all the mountains and rivers
We are bonded by an angelic soul
Through effort common dreams loom
In every home spring will bloom

(2× the whole)

Michelle

Michelle, my beautiful
That's how I always call you, my Michelle.
Michelle my beautiful
Are a few words which go very well together, very well together.
I love you, I love you, I love you
That's all that I know.
Until the dreamed of moment,
When your heart will discover my love in these three words.

Michelle, my beautiful,
Are a few words which go very well together, very well together.
I love you, I love you, I love you
Say that you love me too,
You who are my entire life.
I would give anything for you to see on this day my love, my love
I love you, I love you, I love you.
What more can I say?
For you to believe more strongly
In these three words which are more beautiful than all of the poems.

Michelle, my beautiful
Are a few words which go very well together, very well together.
One day I know you will understand, and forever,
That I love you my Michelle.

Arabian Nights

I come from a faraway place
Where the camels roam the desert,
(Old version:) [They'd cut off your hand for the simplest of crimes
It's barbaric, but... it's my home!]
Immense spaces are spread out flat,
And the water there is little.

A vortex of sand
And the wind's of the east
And the sun's in the west,
Let's get on the magic carpet
And fly to one of those Arabian nights.

Those hot nights
Are like the days,
And most of the time
They're even hotter
In many ways.

Even in the bright light
Of a silver moon,
Many dangers
Awaits for the traveler,
To which he's exposed.

That's Caucasus for you

They say wild people live in the Caucasus
They say mountain people wear their hats all year round
They say they still practice polygamy
And they say the sons of the mountains live for centuries.

They also say that a horseman is no horseman
if he runs from the enemy like a cowardly jackal.
And also that only he who can come up with a way
to stir public excitement is a true brave.

That's Caucasus for you1
A mountainous landscape
A sunny land
That's paradise for you

That's Caucasus for you
A mountainous landscape
A sunny land
That's paradise for you

They say mountain people love sherbets and halva
and also shish kebab2 and chudus3.
They say the Caucasus is not the Caucasus without Lezginka4,
and they say their dancing is plain classy.

They also say people there are simple
and don't like praising speeches or loud empty words.
And also that the love for the elderly
is as holy as the holy Koran teaches.

They say Caucasian brides are as plentiful as mountains
and you won't go to jail for stealing one.
They say they know how to cherish friends.
Life will be harsh there without a great friendship.

And they also proudly say that the mountainous Caucasus
is famed for its hospitality to anyone who ever set foot there5.
And they also speak well of what we have here:
these mountains and sea can't help but please the eye.

  • 1. lit. 'yes...yes, this is the Caucasus' but I matched the last line
  • 2. the local word is 'shashlyk'
  • 3. a kind of salty filled pie, Caucasus' speciality, popular in Daghestan and some regions of Azerbaijan
  • 4. a traditional folk dance
  • 5. 'was there even once'

The Girl Of The Circus

I am the girl of the circus,
for a coin I give
a bit of humble beauty,
a bit of warm emotion.
I am the girl of the circus,
through those roads I go
Tight in my silk mesh,
distributing to all
flowers of illusion.

Hanging from the fragile trapeze
her elegant body, she seems when jumping
a pigeon, white with crazy yearnings that would want to get to the sky;
While the people
excited
contemplates restless her somersault,
under the canvas
of the old circus
A cold of death one feels crossing.

There goes the girl of the circus
She doesn´t find comfort nor love,
She gives to others the happiness
and she suffers the misery and pain.
Finally one night the hand
tired, the trapeze loosened,
And ... poor girl of the circus!
Looking for a round of applause
the death she found.
